What is HERO?
HERO stands for Home Energy Renovation Opportunity. The HERO program provides financing for homeowners to make their homes more energy- or water-efficient. If you’re approved for a HERO loan, you can take advantage of low, fixed interest rates and flexible payment terms. Generally, you can pass on the loan payments to the new owners if you sell your home.
Am I eligible for a HERO loan?
That depends on a few of factors. First, you have to live in one of the California cities or counties that are approved for the program. All of the Temecula Valley is in the approved area. Go to www.heroprogram.com to verify eligibility. Their portal is very easy to use and credit approvals are very fast.
Can I use a HERO loan to install water-efficient landscaping features?
You bet! Between 50 and 70 percent of residential water usage goes to landscaping, so one of the best ways to make your home more water-efficient is to change how you water your lawn (or remove it completely!). Drip irrigation systems are the best way to accomplish that goal. Your landscaping receives the water it needs, without all the waste of run-off water created by sprinkler systems. In some cases you can even retrofit your existing sprinkler system to change it to a drip irrigation system.
What other landscaping projects are HERO approved?
The HERO program covers artificial turf, putting greens, some patio covers, low water landscaping with gravel (and decomposed granite), irrigation smart controllers, and drip irrigation systems for plants.
Can I use the contractor of my choice to install my HERO-approved landscaping?
Actually, you must select a contractor who is registered with the HERO program. All HERO contractors must be correctly licensed and bonded with the California State License Board.
